Bilingual Education

Bilingual learning is more than learning a language. It's understanding a whole different culture of thought.
I started teaching in 2016 as an ESL tutor for recent immigrants in the United States and slowly found that I was teaching more than just how to speak and read. We were learning how to navigate a whole different culture through language and developing new cultural communication styles to help find their way in their communities. I slowly found that this form of learning goes on beyond just crossing borders but happens at every age and every part of society.

Bilingual education might start as a Spanish class in high school or learning how to speak your grandfathers' native language, but it soon develops into something much larger the longer you study it. And our world has always been a bilingual environment, we're just learning how to navigate it differently.

Here in China, we live in a very specific bilingual bubble. It is different from the bilingual education bubble in America and is much different from the one in Europe. Global bilingual education will continue to grow and become a major force in shaping human thought and education. Let us all learn how to embrace this learning as a part of our future as well as part of our shared history.
